Online Tap Metronome

Using a keyboard? Click the instrument once, then play with your keys.

How to play

Tap out a tempo here and let this online tap metronome do the rest, while showing you what your tempo is. It’s based off an original 3D model of a real compact metronome design, including a small LCD screen and four buttons that is pressed. You can run it directly inside your browser without needing to install anything.

Then, you can control it by tapping on your phone or tablet or by using your mouse or computer keyboard. As soon as the model is loaded the status line say Set your tempo · tap Start to play. The default tempo is set at 120 BPM. A question mark in the upper part of the widget expands a brief guide.

How to Use the Online Tap Metronome

Tapping on the Stop all button stops it all. Tapping the Full screen button fills the entire screen with the metronome and the button shows Exit full screen. Pressing Esc (or clicking the button again) restores the normal view.

At the heart of the tool is the big tap tempo pad. Tap on it twice or more steadily and the tempo will appear instently in the big BPM readout. The line underneath the tap buttons help you along. It begins by requesting two or more taps. Then it says the Space key also works. After your first tap, it asks for another. It also displays the count as well as the consistency score (in percent). The higher the score, the more evenly you tapped.

It’s also good with little errors. It uses the previous eight intervals to average out your tapping, ignoring any single-tap misfires. A single late tap doesn’t mess it up. Each tap starts a fresh estimate if you pause longer than four seconds, and there’s a Reset taps button that resets all of them in unison.

There are also two buttons (×2 and ½) that double or halve the tempo you tapped. No matter what you do, tapping alone will never start the click. You have time to get it how you like before you tap again. Once you’re satisfied with the tempo, tap ▶ Start.

The status changes to Playing with the first beat accented, and the button becomes ■ Stop. Beat lights follow along on a row. The first beat is lit up separately in its own color. Beat 1 sounds louder then the others. While playing, you can continue to tap to change the tempo, and it will cleanly start at the beginning of the next bar every time you do.

The − and + buttons adjusts the tempo up or down in a single BPM increment. The number box takes an exact BPM entry. The slider spans the complete range: 30 to 240 BPM. From the Beats menu you select the number of beats per bar (from 1 to 9 or 12; the default is 4). For softer subdivisions there’s the Division menu with options for Beat, Eighths, Triplets and 16ths. The Click menu toggles between Beep (an electronic click) and Wood (a short synthesized resonant click). Level is adjustable using the Volume slider.

Tapping to the music is what keyboards are made for. This online tap metronome has the T key and the Space bar as taps to set the tempo. The arrow keys increase (up and right) or decrease (down and left). There’s also a Start button to begin and stop the click. Note that because of the frame around the metronome on the page, you need to click on an empty spot in the frame before using the keys, not on a menu or slider.

It is a true device. In reality, the 3D model functions as an actual device. Four buttons plays or pause the click, tap a tempo, increase the tempo by one beat, or decrease the tempo by one beat. When the metronome is playing, the LCD screen displays BPM and then counts the beats. While you’re tapping out a tempo, the screen says tap again or how many times you’ve tapped so far.

To rotate the model, click Rotate 3D and use your mouse to drag the background. Pinch or scroll to zoom in and out; click on Front view to go back to the starting angle. Once the page opens there’s no need to an internet connection or sound files, the clicks are made live in your browser.

Pressing Stop all is similar to clicking outside of the metronome, leaving the page, or switching to a different tab. It will stop the metronome but retain your tempo when you next press Start.

If this is your first experience of an online tap metronome, simply choose a piece that you know well and then tap the tap tempo pad in time to the beat of the song eight or so times. You should of pressed start and see if the click aligns with the music.
