Sound

Each stroke comes from a real tabla recording. Tuning shifts the recordings; sliding on the bayan bends the bass.

Play the tabla

Tap any head, stroke pad, or rhythm beat to start playing. The first tap enables sound. On the larger bayan, the head plays Ge and the rim plays Ke. On the smaller dayan, the center plays Tun, the ring plays Tin, and the rim plays Na. The pads also give you closed Te, dry Ta, light Re, and the two-drum strokes Dha and Dhin.

Use two fingers to play both drums together. Hold a bass stroke and drag sideways to bend its pitch, on the drum head or a bass/compound pad. All stroke pads and rhythm beats stay together on one screen in portrait, landscape and fullscreen.

Choose Keharwa, Dadra, or Teentaal and tap Listen. Follow the highlighted beats, adjust the tempo, and play along. Stop silences everything. These are simple practice variations; bols and phrasing vary between traditions.

Game mode teaches two cycles at your pace. Tap the green stroke pad, highlighted beat, or marked drum zone. Amber shows the next different stroke early; PLAY ×2 means two separate strikes before changing. Dha combines Na + Ge, and Dhin combines Tin + Ge: use the compound pad or strike both marked drum zones. The guide shows which part remains. A wrong stroke keeps your place. Pause saves progress; Restart begins again. Listen demonstrates the rhythm.

In Rotate 3D, the heads stay playable. Drag the drum shells or empty space to rotate; start a pinch away from the heads to zoom. Dragging a head plays or bends it. Reset view restores the front playing angle. In a game, a marked zone plays the requested stroke, including the dry Ta rim stroke. Ta and Re also have pads and keyboard shortcuts G and H.

Sound credits & sampling

16 real recordings by dio_333, distributed by Sonic Pi under CC0. Multiple takes alternate for Ge, Ke, Tun, and Te. Tin is represented by the library’s open-Na recording; Dha and Dhin combine treble and bass recordings. Touch zones and pitch bending approximate hand techniques. The original recordings and source references are preserved in the project.
